Stroke by Stroke
The children will learn the fundamentals of 4 strokes during the summer swim season. With each stroke comes a series of rules that must be followed to avoid disqualification. The list below is a brief synopsis, by stroke, of the requirements that the swimmers must learn and practice.
Starting of a Heat:
At the commencement of each heat the referee will signal to the swimmers by a short series of whistles. Three short whistles signifying to approach the block, one long whistle indicates the swimmer is to take their position on the starting blocks. The referee will say “Take your mark” and a horn will sound for the heat to begin.
For backstroke, the referee will still blow three short whistles for the swimmers to approach the water, then a long whistle will indicate the swimmers are to enter the water feet first, holding onto the gutter.
